This is the paid media guide for Reddit Ads. It covers campaign strategy, targeting, creative, measurement, testing, and optimization.

Use this with:

1. When To Use Reddit Ads

Reddit Ads are strongest when you can target a real community, keyword set, interest, or conversation context that maps to your buyer’s problem.

Use Reddit Ads for:

  • Category awareness in niche communities.
  • Product education.
  • Launches and announcements with a clear audience.
  • Retargeting website visitors.
  • Promoting high-value content, tools, templates, webinars, or AMAs.
  • Testing pain-specific messaging.
  • Reaching buyers who research through peer conversations.
  • E-commerce product discovery and dynamic product ads when catalog quality is strong.

Do not use Reddit Ads as a first-choice channel when:

  • You need immediate high-intent search capture.
  • You have no clear audience or subreddit map.
  • Your creative is a generic polished social ad.
  • You cannot handle comments or public criticism.
  • You cannot measure post-click quality.

2. Reddit Ads Account Setup

Preflight Checklist

  • Reddit Ads account created.
  • Billing configured.
  • Business profile completed.
  • Reddit Pixel installed or Conversions API configured.
  • Conversion events tested.
  • UTM naming convention created.
  • Landing pages reviewed for Reddit-specific message match.
  • Comment moderation workflow assigned.
  • Subreddit, keyword, and interest targets researched.
  • Exclusion audiences prepared where possible.

Measurement Setup

Reddit supports standard conversion events such as:

  • Page Visit
  • View Content
  • Search
  • Add To Cart
  • Add To Wishlist
  • Purchase
  • Lead

Use custom events for meaningful product milestones, but keep reporting clean. If both Reddit Pixel and Conversions API are used, event deduplication is required.

Attribution Defaults To Know

Reddit’s attribution setup supports click-through and view-through plus click-through attribution. Current default windows are:

Attribution typeDefault
Click-through28 days
View-through and click-through28-day click, 1-day view

Available windows include 1, 7, and 28 days. Align Reddit reporting with your broader paid media model before judging performance.

3. Campaign Objectives

Choose the objective based on what you need the algorithm to optimize for, not what you hope happens eventually.

GoalRecommended objectiveNotes
Broad awarenessAwareness/reachUse strong visual or community-native creative
Website trafficTrafficUseful for content and landing page tests
Video consumptionVideo viewsWorks when the message can be shown quickly
Lead captureLead generation or conversionsLead Gen Ads collect leads on Reddit but are in beta/select availability; conversions use your landing page
Signups or salesConversionsRequires clean event tracking
App growthApp installUse mobile-first creative
Product catalog salesCatalog salesRequires catalog, pixel/CAPI, and product events
Conversation or AMAAwareness, traffic, or engagement-oriented setup depending on formatPlan comment coverage

4. Ad Formats

Reddit’s current self-serve and business ad formats include Free-form, Image, Video, Carousel, Conversation, Product/Dynamic Product, and AMA-related options. Some high-impact offerings require working with Reddit sales.

Format Selection

FormatBest forAvoid when
Free-form AdsNative storytelling, explainers, text-heavy posts, mixed mediaYou need direct conversion optimization only
Image AdsSimple product or offer messageThe concept needs nuance
Video AdsDemos, visual proof, narrative, awarenessYou cannot caption or hook quickly
Carousel AdsMultiple products, steps, comparisons, feature walkthroughsYou only have one strong asset
Conversation AdsAppearing near discussion contexts and commentsYou are not ready for community tone
Product AdsE-commerce catalog promotionCatalog quality is weak
Dynamic Product AdsE-commerce prospecting and retargetingYou do not have product IDs/events aligned
AMAExpert-led trust buildingThe expert cannot answer hard questions live

Creative Specs Snapshot

Verify specs in Ads Manager before production because platform requirements change. Current Reddit business materials describe these practical baselines:

FormatPractical spec notes
ImageJPG/PNG, commonly 1:1 or 16:9, strong mobile readability
VideoMP4/MOV, 1:1, 4:5, or 16:9, short videos often work best, captions strongly recommended
Carousel2-6 cards, images or GIFs, useful for stories and products
Free-formRich-text post with optional image, video, GIF, and link elements
Product/DPACatalog-backed product creative, requires clean catalog and event mapping

Format Recommendations By Funnel Stage

StageRecommended formatsCreative angle
AwarenessVideo, Image, Free-form, ConversationCategory pain, surprising insight, product truth
ConsiderationFree-form, Carousel, VideoComparison, workflow, proof, objections
ConversionImage, Video, Carousel, Product AdsOffer, demo, free tool, signup, product benefit
RetargetingImage, Carousel, Video, DPASpecific next step, proof, urgency, reminder

5. Targeting Strategy

Reddit targeting includes community audiences, keywords, interest groups, custom audiences, demographics, location, device, and automated expansion.

Targeting Types

Targeting typeUse whenNotes
Community audiencesYou know specific subreddits where buyers gatherReddit targets people who subscribed to or visited selected communities in the last 28 days; ads may serve elsewhere on Reddit
KeywordsYou know exact problem and buying languageGood for intent and contextual relevance
Interest groupsYou need broader scaleLess precise than community or keyword targeting
Custom audiencesYou have site visitors, customer lists, or engagement poolsUse for retargeting and exclusions
LocationGeo-specific offer or marketCan be narrow for local campaigns
Gender/deviceRelevant only when materially tied to performance or productAvoid unnecessary narrowing
Automated expansionYou have good seed targeting and need scaleWatch quality and placement reports

For Housing, Employment, and Credit campaigns, Reddit’s Audience Manager documentation says zip code targeting, audience expansion, lookalikes, and gender targeting cannot be used.

Custom Audience Options

Use custom audiences when you have a legitimate first-party signal or a clear exclusion need:

Custom audienceUse case
Website retargetingBring back visitors who viewed key pages, started checkout, or did not convert
Customer listsRe-engage known customers or exclude existing customers from prospecting
Reddit engagement retargetingRetarget people who interacted with prior Reddit ads without requiring a pixel
LookalikesReach people similar to existing customers or converters where available and policy-eligible
Third-party audiencesUse approved partner segments when they add meaningful targeting signal

Customer lists and other personal data uploads must be permissioned and handled under the applicable privacy rules.

Audience Build Process

  1. Start with organic research.
  2. Build a Tier 1 subreddit list.
  3. Extract keywords from high-intent threads.
  4. Group targets by pain or use case, not by broad persona.
  5. Build separate ad groups for distinct intent clusters.
  6. Exclude existing customers and recent converters where possible.
  7. Retarget site visitors and content engagers separately.

Example Audience Clusters

ClusterTargetingMessage
Competitor painCompetitor keywords and relevant communities“Switching from X? Avoid these migration mistakes.”
Beginner educationCategory keywords and broad communities“A practical guide to solving Y.”
High-intent buyer“best”, “alternative”, “review”, “pricing” keywords“Compare options before you commit.”
ImplementationSetup/workflow keywords“Use this checklist/template.”
RetargetingSite visitors or content viewers“See how this works in practice.”

6. Creative Strategy

Reddit creative should feel like it belongs in the feed. Useful, specific, transparent, and slightly less polished often beats generic brand creative.

What Works

  • Plain-language headlines.
  • Screenshots, diagrams, product proof, or real examples.
  • Specific audience callouts.
  • Tradeoff framing.
  • “We analyzed…” or “Here is what we learned…” formats.
  • Free tools, templates, calculators, checklists, and guides.
  • Offers that match subreddit problems.
  • Comments enabled when the team can respond well.

What Usually Fails

  • Corporate slogans.
  • Vague benefit claims.
  • Overproduced lifestyle creative.
  • Stock imagery.
  • Landing pages that ignore the ad’s promise.
  • Engagement bait.
  • Ads that pretend not to be ads.

Headline Formulas

Use direct, Reddit-native headlines:

  • “We analyzed [number] [things]. Here are the patterns.”
  • “A practical checklist for [painful task].”
  • “What I wish I knew before [job to be done].”
  • “The hidden cost of [common workaround].”
  • “[Competitor/category] alternatives for teams that need [specific need].”
  • “How to choose [tool/category] without overbuying.”
  • “If you are stuck with [problem], check these 5 things first.”

Creative Testing Hierarchy

Test in this order:

  1. Audience/problem cluster.
  2. Offer.
  3. Message angle.
  4. Format.
  5. Headline.
  6. Visual.
  7. CTA.

Most poor Reddit Ads performance is an audience/message mismatch, not a button problem.

7. Landing Pages

Reddit traffic often arrives skeptical and research-oriented. The landing page should continue the conversation, not switch into generic sales mode.

Landing Page Checklist

  • Headline matches the ad promise.
  • First screen states who it is for.
  • Includes concrete proof, screenshots, examples, or data.
  • Addresses tradeoffs and limitations.
  • Uses Reddit-sourced language.
  • Has a low-friction next step.
  • Loads quickly on mobile.
  • UTM capture works.
  • Conversion event fires.

Community/keyword tests40-50%
Creative/offer tests20-30%
Experimental formats10%

Adjust based on available budget and conversion volume.

9. Dynamic Product Ads And Catalogs

Use Product Ads or Dynamic Product Ads for physical product catalogs and e-commerce use cases. Reddit’s DPA documentation says DPAs are only compatible with physical products.

DPA Requirements

Before running DPAs:

  • Create product catalog.
  • Install Reddit Pixel or Conversions API.
  • Create Add To Cart, View Content, and Purchase events.
  • Ensure product IDs match between catalog and event data.
  • Include currency and value for purchase events.
  • Map catalog to the Reddit Pixel.
  • Verify events in Events Manager or Pixel Helper.
  • Check catalog diagnostics.
  • Use advanced campaign creation for DPAs; Reddit documentation says DPAs cannot be created in Simple Create.

DPA Structure

Reddit recommends separating:

  • Prospecting ad group.
  • Retargeting ad group.

For early tests, use broad product sets such as All Products until the system has enough signal. Exclude recent purchasers from prospecting where possible.

Maintain the catalog actively:

  • Use a data feed for DPAs when possible so pricing, availability, and product metadata stay current.
  • Check product diagnostics and DPA readiness before scaling.
  • Keep product IDs in the catalog aligned with Pixel or CAPI event metadata.
  • Use the default All Products product set early, then split product sets once enough signal exists.

10. Comments On Ads

Reddit Ads can become public conversations. That can be an advantage if handled well.

Comments are a campaign/ad setup decision, not just a community-management decision. For example, Reddit’s DPA setup flow describes comments as optional through an allow comments setting.

Enable Comments When

  • The offer is genuinely useful.
  • The team can respond quickly.
  • The topic is not highly sensitive.
  • The brand can handle direct criticism.
  • The SME is available for technical questions.

Disable Or Avoid Comments When

  • Legal/compliance risk is high.
  • The campaign is time-sensitive and unstaffed.
  • The product has unresolved public issues.
  • The ad claim is likely to trigger hostile debate.

Response SLA

Comment typeResponse time
Genuine questionSame day
Buying questionWithin a few hours
Support issueSame day with escalation
MisinformationSame day, factual response
Bad-faith insultUsually ignore unless policy requires action

11. Optimization Playbook

If CTR Is Low

Likely causes:

  • Weak hook.
  • Wrong community/keyword target.
  • Too polished or generic creative.
  • Offer does not match subreddit intent.

Actions:

  • Rewrite headline using thread language.
  • Test a more specific pain.
  • Try Free-form or text-first creative.
  • Split broad audiences into narrower clusters.

If CTR Is High But Conversion Is Low

Likely causes:

  • Curiosity clicks without intent.
  • Landing page mismatch.
  • Weak offer.
  • Mobile friction.

Actions:

  • Review session quality.
  • Tighten ad promise.
  • Improve landing page proof.
  • Test a lower-friction offer.
  • Separate mobile and desktop if needed.

If CPA Is High

Likely causes:

  • Campaign is too cold for direct conversion.
  • Pixel event is too deep.
  • Audience too broad.
  • Offer too aggressive.

Actions:

  • Move cold traffic to content/tool offer.
  • Retarget engaged users.
  • Optimize for a higher-funnel event until volume improves.
  • Exclude poor-performing communities or placements.

If Comments Are Negative

Likely causes:

  • Claim is too broad.
  • Audience mismatch.
  • Pricing or trust objection.
  • Poor landing page or product reputation issue.

Actions:

  • Pause if criticism is valid and unresolved.
  • Answer substantively if criticism is answerable.
  • Update ad copy to set expectations.
  • Use comments as objection research.
